1402 blog posts, written between 2008 and 2016. These are mostly short observations, funny thoughts and word playing. Some are embarrasingly corny, some more deep. I keep it here mostly a little time capsule for myself, organized by month:

speaking of what, i should say that i'm a big fan of practical learning and reinventing the wheel as a necessary step to real understanding, rather than reading a an exhaustive book, cause the former will force you to build your own interpretation and intuitions regarding the subject.

also, i'm sure i already said that, but just in case, i'm always for starting with small projects rather than going for your utopic super uber master piece. forget it. it. will. not. happen.

"dear inigo, i am a experienced programmer, i have been doing java and c++ for a couple of years. now i want to create pretty fractals and demos like yours. i'm reading your tutorials, but i don't understand what the normal is and how you calculate it. can you have a look to my code, and tell me where the mistake is? my screen is all black. thanks in advance."

this is a fictional email, but pretty close to the average

i never know how to answer these

¡mal mal mal!

mirroring vs inverting
2011-03-12
you have an arbitrary surface normal n. you want to generate a random vector v that is in the positive hemisphere around that direction (without any specific distribution). simple approach: you generate your vector at random, and do a dot product to check if it's indeed in the right half space, and flip it in case it isn't:

v *= sign( v.n );

now you do this in an animated environment, and due to precision issues some of the vector that lie close to the half space splitting plane start being detected as belonging to one side or the other randomly, and they start to flicker as hell. you solve the problem by replacing the flipping of your vectors by a mirroring over that plane:

if (v.n) < 0 then v = v - 2*n*(v.n)

now v is continuous, under potential epsilon changes v.n around zero due to accuracy issues, and images are stable. neat!

note: n*(v.n) is the projection of v onto n. we want to keep the antiprojection of v intact, ie v - n*(v.n), and reverse the projection, therefore v - n*(v.n) - n*(v.n) = v - 2*n*(v.n). another way to see it is that we take v and we move downwards two times by it's projection.

a hundred kisses
2011-03-01
this city has so much love to give, that kisses are in fact free. even gratuitous. after only one year you can collect them in hundreds, to say the least. yet, confusing and playful as it is, in the end love boils down to it's basic principles. even here. and then, that one kiss can be as desired, or difficult, or as intense, or as moving, as the kiss of your life.
