equivocaciones y evolución
2010-09-30

osea osea, vaya odisea

sure - it better be safe...
2010-09-23
it always sounds weird to me when i'm about to make a plane trip and people tell me "have a safe trip".

cause a trip better be safe, or i die, you know? i mean, there is nothing in between like "yeah the trip was partially safe - we crashed from 40000 feet into the ocean and we all died. but we died just a bit". so, when they wish me "have a safe trip" i am in fact reading it like "hope you don't die tomorrow", which is a very dark thing to wish anybody...

something like "have a pleasant trip" seems more appropriate?

hippies today - the product of capitalism
2010-09-16
only rich people can afford to be hippie
(everybody else are pretty busy surviving)
which is not bad per-se (somebody has to!)
if people were a little but more coherent

having an iphone or a car is not what drives me in life
at all
you will be surprised by how few thing i actually own
yet, i'm very careful not to criticize capitalism that naively

so i find it awkward when a snooty kid
who has everything for free (thx daddy, thx mommy!)
who is the ultimate product of capitalism him/herself
plays the hippie

wait, was this a real musical?
2010-09-13
ok, an example.

b.a.r.t., thursday's last ride to the Easy Bay (which is not that late as you might expect, tho. whatever), passing by Civic Center station. there is this all-time-smiling young asian guy with a tiny guitar sitting in the couch next to the central door of the car. an old caucasian man sits next to him. the young guy seems bored, and at some point starts to tune the tiny guitar, and plays few chords to test everything is right. he decides to starts humming, then singing very low, but nobody around him, i included, give a shit about him. as usual. until the old guy next to him starts singing too. cause then the young one starts playing the chords louder and joins into the singing, in full voice.

now everybody in the car smile, slightly embarrassed. however, the old man starts clapping to the rhythm of the song, and couple of old ladies sitting in front of me, which looked very shy to me, join the clapping too and the singing as well. apparently it's a very popular song - cause everybody seems to know it - in a matter of seconds i can count up to nine people who are singing in chorus. this accounts for the asian guy, the old man next to him, the two old ladies, two suit-dressed executives, a guy with a skate board, and a young couple. now a huge black guy comes from the very other side of the car, sits in the floor right below the guitarist, and starts singing with his very high pitch and perfectly tuned voice. in a matter of seconds, what was no more than a car full of sleepy unrelated people has become a spontaneous party!

when the song finishes people start laughing. then the young guitarist resumes the show with a new song, which again most people in a three couch radius join. after four songs we arrive to the 19th at Oakland downtown, which is the place where the guitarist gets off the b.a.r.t.. everybody claps. before leaving he tells "that was cool, my friend" to the black guy with the amazing voice, who answers "yeah, see you bro".

that was a spontaneous colorful human interaction, the formation of a small community, and the act of having fun together for no apparent reason but the celebration of life. or was i being part of a freaking musical life movie of some sort?

besides, the fact that the guitarist and the good singing guy, despite not knowing each other at all, called each other "my friend" and "brother" tells me a lot too about the history of this place and the way have grown up here. but that's for another post.
like in the movies
2010-09-12
i keep telling people than living in the us is for me like living in a movie. like within the movie.

in the beginning, when i first arrived, i had this feeling of being living surreal experiences all the time, almost like if this was Truman's show. things around me happened like in movies! thing is that, personally, i always thought american movies had all a big component of fiction, or that they were creating a fictional cultural universe that helped them tell a story, cause otherwise it meant everything would be so... different here. but i was wrong. cause indeed after arriving here i slowly started to understand that actually most of the movies are not that much about fiction, but reflect local reality, daily life here. you can take this in two ways.

after the revelation, first, honestly, i was slightly disappointed for realizing that in fact all those movies were not some sort of self over-caricaturized fantasy, are nothing but plain reflections of reality. however, now, i realize the wild richness of colors and flavors and smells of the american culture. which i find beautiful.
what's the real gift?
2010-09-10

yes, you surely must be gifted to become a dancer, or a singer, or a physicist, or an athlet, or an actor, and not only make a living from it but become a reference, or even famous. i do agree, you surely must be gifted.

however i disagree in the meaning most people give to this idea of "a gift". i think it's not that much about having some exceptional ability or precision or natural skill or talent or sensibility for something. you need that, for sure. but, i believe the real gift is to have the strength to be able to focus and direct all your passion and energy towards a clear target, and tirelessly invest your time, even life, into researching, improving, practicing. that's the real gift here.

cause there are many people with "natural skillful gifts" in all sort of disciplines out there, but only a very few become stars. and you know what, seems like most of those stars will tell you they spend every single day of their life working on their passion, wherever they were, whatever troubles they were facing.

on binary square roots
2010-09-05
just for the sake of exercising, say you had a an architecture that supported square roots, but not exponentials (expf) and logarithms (logf) or any other power (powf) or transcendental functions (sinf, cosf, acosf, ...). how would you compute something like y = x^0.4545?

depending on the precision you needed, you could expand the exponent in as many binary digits as needed, and use the bits to choose the right subpowers of two:

// four decimal digits precison:
//
// returns powf( x, 0.454589844f ) =
// powf( x, 931.0f/2048.0f )
//
float x_pow_0d4545( const float x )
{
float x01 = sqrtf( x );
float x02 = sqrtf( x01 ); // 1
float x03 = sqrtf( x02 ); // 1
float x04 = sqrtf( x03 ); // 1
float x05 = sqrtf( x04 ); // 0
float x06 = sqrtf( x05 ); // 1
float x07 = sqrtf( x06 ); // 0
float x08 = sqrtf( x07 ); // 0
float x09 = sqrtf( x08 ); // 0
float x10 = sqrtf( x09 ); // 1
float x11 = sqrtf( x10 ); // 1

// 931 = 1110100011
return x02 * x03 * x04 * x06 * x10 * x11;
}

// two decimal digits precison:
//
// returns powf( x, 0.453125f ) =
// powf( x, 29.0f/64.0f )
//
float x_pow_0d45( const float x )
{
float x01 = sqrtf( x );
float x02 = sqrtf( x01 ); // 1
float x03 = sqrtf( x02 ); // 1
float x04 = sqrtf( x03 ); // 1
float x05 = sqrtf( x04 ); // 0
float x06 = sqrtf( x05 ); // 1

// 29 = 11101
return x02 * x03 * x04 * x06;
}

slooow?

10 minutes waiting, and my water is still not boiling... seems sensible to start thinking that perhaps i actually have forgotten to switch the heat on...?
