best compliment I ever had to my work: "fuck you motherfucking god what kind of fucking shit is that"

sometimes there is one word
and only one word
for that thing you wanna say
and there are no synonyms
no alternatives
just one word
and when you put it
there
cause that was its place
and in no other place means the same
then you die a bit

a veces hay una palabra
y una sola palabra
para eso que quieres decir
y no existen sinónimos
ni alternativas
sólo una palabra,
y cuando la colocas
ahí
porque ése era su lugar
y en ninguno otro es ella

women I admire
2010-05-29

juliete
sofia
judit
gabriela
gemma
bea
carmen
assimina
anne
peggy
ana
almudena

in no specific order, these are the women I admire,
for some reason, or maybe for many reasons,
but mostly for their attitude towards life
cause then the rest just follows:

juliete
sofia
judit
gabriela
gemma
bea
carmen
assimina
anne
peggy
ana
almudena

signed distance to a box
2010-05-25
for when you are inside the box

float signedDistToBox( const vec3 & p, const vec3 & b )
{
const vec3 di = abs(p) - b;
const float mc = maxcomp(di);
return mc<0.0f ? mc : length(max(di,0.0f));
}

or, if you think computing a square root is faster than taking a branch, then

float signedDistToBox( in vec3 p, in vec3 b )
{
const vec3 di = abs(p) - b;
return min( maxcomp(di), length(max(di,0.0)) );
}

with maxcomp( vec ) returning the greater of the components of the vector.
twenty-eleven
2010-05-24
Today I did twenty-eleven. My mum had to remind me this day was coming, a couple of days ago. It's not that I forget dates, not at all, the problem is that I hardly ever know what date I'm living in (note, girlfriends don't seem to understand the difference, tho). What I do forget, often, is my age. So when I hang the phone up to my mum, I took my calculator and subtracted 1979 from 2010. "Good", I thought, "I'm still a '5 bit' guy". Then went back to my (not that nerdy) stuff.

Celebrations will come next weekend, although I don't need excuses for celebrating life, which I happen to be doing so often lately. For now, among the dozens of messages/calls/emails and the cake in the office, I will try to remember the very spontaneous and charming "happy birthday to you" song at the dance school, directed by the lovely Kate.

Thanks so much to all!

- - - - - - - - -

Hoy he cumplido veintionce.

once upon a time we needed horses to move around. then, not long ago, I can almost remember it, we needed cars. things finally got better and today we don't need but public transport. however some places are not there yet - they got stuck into the past, in the old way of doing things.

- - - - -

Thing is that indeed people are always eager to buy hope, especially those who suffer poverty and can barely pay for it. In fact it doesn't really matter in which of its variants or formats it comes - selling hope is always good business.

the secret is...
2010-05-18
...that dreams come true indeed... with work. I'm sorry for ruining it with the last two words, but for some reason people tend to forget that part and write secret with capital S. I do understand it's tempting to play like Bart Simpson, and keep only the sexy part of the story and delegate the hard part of working to mystic powers instead:

Bart - This book uses the ancient power of wanting
Teacher - That makes absolutely no sense
Bart - Hey! Just because we don't understand electricty, doesn't mean we can't enjoy its benefits
Teacher- But we do understand electricity! Every positively charged nuceleus is...
Bart - Hold it out! You are not a teacher any more!
[...]
Teacher - This starts to sound like one of those Loonie Self Help books
Bart - Loonie? Would a Loonie Self help book come with a magic question mark inside? Huuh, huuh, huuh?
[...]
Teacher finally gets her project up and running.
[...]
Bart - All thanks to The Answer!
Teacher - Well, opening the store was a lot of work, but your faith in me got me throu it.

la línea de la vergüenza
2010-05-11

the line of embarrassment
2010-05-10
Indeed this has been a recurring dilemma ever since I remember to have some consciousness.

The dilemma here is that once you accept things like arts and science are things worth cultivating and developing (why would we otherwise exist?), then one has to face the brutal fact that those things cost money and resources. So in the end the dilemma boils down to deciding where the balance is between spending our energies on those luxuries instead of on fixing the other vital issues is like worldwide poverty, massive natural resource devastation or pollution.

When I was teenager I liked to think in global terms, like in how should humanity respond to different issues. Today, I'm back to a more practical and childish approach where I simply try to put my own ethics in order first.

And my problem is that for me the limit between rational thinking and demagogy gets blurred very quickly. This doesn't allow me to see clear and sharply. For example I can easily conclude that making action movies is a terrible thing cause a complete province could be feed with the salary of a single actor. But movies are culture, aren't they...? But then, what about opera, ballet, jazz? What about sports like ski, chess or football?

My personal dilemma is therefore how to define a morality I can be proud of. In short, it's all about deciding where I should put my line of embarrassment. Is it in the hairdressers and jewelry for dogs and pets? Is it in the millionaire collector of Barbie dolls? Is it in the concert of Lady Gaga, in the Nutkracker show of every Christmas, in the production of movies, in the research of NASA in Mars?

Where should I put my line of embarrassment?
but this we know
2010-05-09
There are slaves in this world. There are people who live hell and will always do. There are countries that are in perpetual war. "But this we know."

There are slaves in this world who are working so that we can have cheap cloth and food. There are people who live hell and will always do cause we screwed up their society. There are countries in perpetual war so that some of our economies keep growing. "But this we know too."

Even if those people don't or can't respond, nature will.

There are seas which don't hold fishes anymore. There are forests that don't have trees anymore. There are paradises which are not paradises anymore. "But this we know."

There are seas which don't hold fishes anymore cause we needed them for feeding humans. There are forests that don't have trees anymore cause we devastated them so we could have massive cow farms / meat factories for feeding ourselfs. There are paradises which are not paradises anymore cause we destroyed them looking for oil and gas. "But this we know too."

"But this we know, it's nothing new", I think while I go in the subway towards the theater. I look around, and I see iphones and shopping bags with cheap cloths, or books. I get down in the right station and I step out, climb the stairs, turn the corner and head towards the theater. Afterwards I will probably have some fun with a couple of friends. While I walk, I ask myself the same question I made myself so many times when I was born, when I was 16: "do we live so well that we will never give up in our lack of embarrassement?".
distance to a curved box
2010-05-08

How to compute the distance to a rounded box:

float distToCBox( vec3 pos, vec3 box, float rad )
{
return length( max( abs(pos) - box + vec3(rad), 0.0 ) ) - rad;
}

pos, position in space of the point
box, size of the box in x, y and z (half size)
rad, radious of the curved borders

The box is of course centered at the origin and aligned to the xyz axes - you will have to pretransform the point to get the distance to an arbitrarily rotated and translated curved cube.

una aclaración
2010-05-05

2010-05-04
¿Ciudades, que recuerde? A ver - Paris, Aix en Provence, Oslo, Pamplona, San Sebastián, Milano, Venecia, Bruselas, Gent, Brujas, Anveres, Charleroi, La Haya, Colonia, Berlin, Frankfurt, Berna, Zurich, Londres, Ginebra, Madrid, Viena, Budapest, Helsinki, Valencia, Amsterdan, Bergen, Barcelona, Londres, Copenhagen, Lyon, Ljubljana, Hrvatska, Bilbao, Piran.
